Merry Christmas Eve!!!!! And our last Yule Lad is….. The thirteenth was Candle Beggar – ‘twas cold, I believe, if he was not the last of the lot on Christmas Eve. He trailed after the little ones who, like happy sprites, ran about the farm with their fine tallow lights. #believingthebizarre #yuleladsoficeland #yulelads #candlebeggar

Y’all better hide your meat when this next Yule Lad comes into town. Meat Hook, the twelfth one, his talent would display as soon as he arrived on Saint Thorlak´s Day. He snagged himself a morsel of meet of any sort, although his hook at times was a tiny bit short. #believingthebizarre #yuleladsoficeland #yulelads

Our 11th Yule Lad is the infamous Door Sniffer. Eleventh was Door Sniffer, a doltish lad and gross. He never got a cold, yet had a huge, sensitive nose. He caught the scent of lace bread while leagues away still and ran toward it weightless as wind over dale and hill #believingthebizarre #yulelads #yuleladsoficeland #doorsniffer

The 13 Yule Lads, Gryla, and the Yule Cat | Ep. 87

The 13 Yule Lads, Gryla, and the Yule Cat | Ep. 87 As we get closer to Christmas, we thought it would be fun to tackle Icelandic folklore – the 13 Yule Lads. Essentially, these are Icelandic “pranksters.” They come to town one by one during the last 13 nights before Yule, and perform a particular task. Some weird and some weirder. We also discuss the terrifying troll, Gryla, and the big black Yule Cat. But how believable is all of this Christmas fun? Listen now. Listen on Apple Listen on Spotify Listen on Google 13 Yule Lads: The Iceland Christmas Trolls You know Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen, but do you recall the most festive Icelandic Trolls of all. What’s up Bizarros!  This week we dive into a different Christmas tradition that hails from Iceland. We’re going to get into the mysterious thirteen trolls, the Yule Lads Who are the Yule Lads? Icelandic folklore says the Trolls lived in the mountains and only came down from t...

And the next Yule Lad is: Skyr Gobbler, the eighth, was an awful stupid bloke. He lambasted the skyr tub till the lid on it broke. Then he stood there gobbling – his greed was well known – until, about to burst, he would bleat, howl and groan. #believingthebizarre #yuleladsoficeland #yuleladslegend #skyrgobbler

Let’s meet our next Yule Lad, Spoon Licker. The fourth was Spoon Licker; like spindle he was thin. He felt himself in clover when the cook wasn´t in. Then stepping up, he grappled the stirring spoon with glee, holding it with both hands for it was slippery. #believingthebizarre #yuleladsoficeland #yulelads #spoonlicker

Let’s meet our 2nd Yule Lad, Gully Gawk. The second was Gully Gawk, gray his head and mien. He snuck into the cow barn from his craggy ravine. Hiding in the stalls, he would steal the milk, while the milkmaid gave the cowherd a meaningful smile. Make sure to have your shoes out to get some candy if the Yule Lads stop by your house. #believingthebizarre #yulelads #gullygawk #icelandfolklore

“The Hands Resist Him” Haunted Painting | Ep. 86 Welcome to another episode of Believing the Bizarre. Let me paint you a picture – this week, we discuss one of the most haunted paints of all time, The Hands Resist Him. Painted by Bill Stoneham in 1972, The Hands Resist Him was originally just intended to pay the bills and was inspired by a poem written by his first wife and a photograph he found of himself. However, the painting seems to negatively impact everyone it touches, including a few celebrities, and famously terrified the masses when it was listed on eBay in 2000. But, is the painting truly haunted? Listen now! Listen on Apple Listen on Spotify Listen on Google The Haunted Painting: The Hands Resist Him Can a picture harm you? The London Dungeon | Ep. 85

Image
Welcome to another episode of Believing the Bizarre . It’s listener submission time, brought to us by Katie, and this week we head to London, specifically the London Dungeon. The London Dungeon was opened in the 1970s on Tooley Street as a museum of various medieval torture instruments and has grown over the years into a massive actor-led tourist attraction with rides. The rides aren’t the only thing entertaining guests, however. Countless employees and guests have claimed to see spirits, shadows, children, and more. But, is it believable? Listen now to find out. Listen on Apple Listen on Spotify Listen on Google Do haunted houses attract spirits and ghosts? Could a tourist attraction depicting the macabre really be home to something truly terrifying? Are the shadowy extras in the attraction really ghosts, and not actors in a thrilling haunted house? What’s up Bizarros?
