The Sanatorium functioned as a TB hospital for about 50 years until it shut down in 1961 with the advancement of antibiotics. It is estimated that between 10,000 and 20,000 people died in those 50 years and were subjected to painful treatments such as electroshock therapy and experimental surgeries that sometimes led to collapsed lungs. There were a lot of experiments for the greater good and tests done that probably were done in desperation for the “greater good.” One procedure they would perform involved having infected parts of the lung removed and sometimes the entire lung. Another involved the removal of several rib bones from the chest wall to collapse a lung. Naturally, between the procedures and TB itself, death was a pretty common occurrence at Waverly Hills Sanatorium.
